Container Gardening
Container gardening is one of the most rewarding and fun types home gardening.
Specially for people who are short of gardening space.
With container gardening you can select and create many different kinds of garden worlds in a small portion of land.

Containers come in many sizes, shapes and colors. Gardening in containers lets you control your selection of plant materials easily due to the size of your container.
Your container garden depend on you for moisture, fertilizer nutrients and amounts of day light.
After deciding what type of plants you would like to grow is best to know how big your plant can get. The size of the types of plants will dictate the size of container you'll need.
One good example and the plant that most people know in size is the tomato
The tomato is a plant that grows very well in containers and in my opinion does better in pots than in the ground.
Next for your container gardening projects you'll need the proper soil mixture. Now a days you can buy special soils for just about any type of plants, some mixes have amounts of nutrients mixed in.

Many people like my self who enjoy container gardening will create their own mixes by adding finished compost or composted manure to their soil. I for one save all my kitchen vegetable scrap materials and every three months have a new batch to use in my containers or add to my gardens as a boost.

I mix half and half ( commercial soil with my home made compost) and this mixture has produced phenomenal results for me over the years.
Ok, now you have your plant material, you have your pots or containers and you have your perfect organic soil mixture, what's next?. The next step after you have your plants in place will be moisture. Over watering is one of the biggest problems in container gardening.
So when you should water? my solution is a simple one, you should water when the soil is dry to the touch. Use your finger as your watering gauge, if the soil is dry it's time to water but at the same time please check your containers every single day for moisture.
Some types of plants use more water then others and some will want or grow best if you give them a little fertilizer once a week.
Plant care is a very important factor in container gardening, moisture will evaporate more rapidly in containers than in your garden and specially if you have your plants in containers outdoors.
In the summer months I use the double container method outdoor. I place the planted container inside a larger one and insulate the two pots by a layer of straw or peatmoss.
Here is a list or ideas of vegetables and plants for your containers:
1. Bulbs ( daffadills , onions , tulips , green onions)
2. Tropical plants - house plants.
3. Herbs ( your kitchen will love this container with basil ,cilantro, parsley )
4. Flowers ( marigolds, petunias , daisies )
5. Tomatoes , peppers , carrots , radishes ......just about anything you think of but
remember that you are limited to plant size or container NOT imagination.
So use your imagination and have a lot of fun with your container gardening.
